Publicize your publicity: here’s how

A few blogs back, I highlighted a mention and photo in Lucky magazine that were garnered using public relations tactics. With a small amount of effort (identifying the right publication; zeroing in on the most appropriate editor and providing information that was of benefit to the magazine’s readers) we received a good amount of page space without paying for an ad.

We didn’t stop there. Being featured in a national magazine was newsworthy itself, so we distributed a news release to local magazines and other publications about the coverage. Within a week, three local publications had printed the information—and a photo of the featured item—extending the life of the Lucky mention and reaching a new audience of people who may not have seen the original coverage.

PR Briefs is a blog of tips, resources and case studies for the public relations professional and the PR novice. Feel free to comment, re-post or ask questions—I hope you enjoy your experience here.

PR and marketing have been the focus of my career for the past 30 years. As an ad agency client during the early years, I got to experience a birds-eye view of agencies and the experience wasn't always a good one. When Ideaworks opened in 1995, we were determined to break the mold, and after 15 years, more than 300 awards and hundreds of client referrals, I think we're starting to get there.
